New $46 million village will boost economy.

Civil works and site preparation have commenced on a new $46 million retirement village being built at Rosny on Hobart’s Eastern Shore.

In launching the village Ray Groom, Chairman of Southern Cross Care Tasmania, said “Tasmania needs big projects like this one to create jobs and economic activity.”

Southern Cross Care, a not-for-profit Tasmanian community organisation is building the new village after purchasing a nine hectare site on Gordons Hill Road from the Clarence City Council and the State Government.

Mr Groom said that Southern Cross Care has for many years been keen to have a presence on the Eastern Shore, which he described as “a very vibrant, attractive and progressive part of Tasmania”.
Mr Groom said the village would be set in very attractive, beautiful gardens. “It will comprise 76 villas, 16 one bedroom apartments, a clubhouse for the enjoyment of residents and a 60 bed aged care facility.”

“The village will be in an excellent location, in close proximity to shops, medical services, the Rosny Library, a cinema complex, tennis and bowls clubs, a golf course, restaurants and hotels. For the sports minded, it is also very close to the Bellerive Oval where international cricket and AFL football is played.”

“Not only will this village provide a much needed service for the residents of this part of Tasmania, but it will also give a boost to the local economy” Mr Groom said.
“Many jobs will be created during the construction phase and about 100 jobs on a permanent basis.”
“We expect to complete the first 29 villas by October of this year. By that stage we will also have built the clubhouse.”

Mr Groom said that if everything goes to plan, it is expected that the construction of the whole village will be completed by the end of next year.

“We sincerely thank the Clarence City Council and the Federal and State Governments for their strong support of the project.”
